Mission Hill Family Estate is in West Kelowna, roughly a 20-minute drive north of Peachland on Highway 97. It is the most architecturally ambitious winery in the Okanagan and the one most worth building a half-day around.

A short history

The winery was established in 1966, among the first in the Okanagan Valley. Anthony von Mandl bought the estate, by then abandoned, in 1981 and spent the decades that followed rebuilding it. The first sign that the Okanagan could compete internationally came in 1994, when Mission Hill’s 1992 Chardonnay took the Best Chardonnay trophy at the International Wine & Spirit Competition in London.

Between 1996 and 2002 the estate was rebuilt to a design by Olson Kundig Architects at a cost of about $35 million. That is the winery you visit today.

The architecture

You arrive through a keystone arch into an open plaza dominated by a twelve-storey bell tower, hung with four bells cast by Fonderie Paccard in France; the largest weighs close to 800 kilograms. A Henry Moore sculpture stands at its base, and the dining terrace looks out over the vineyards and Okanagan Lake.

Visiting in 2026

The winery is open daily, 11:00 am to 7:00 pm.

Book ahead if you are coming in summer. From 9 May to 8 September 2026, entry is limited to members and guests holding a reservation. Same-day bookings are taken when there is room, but arriving without one is a real risk in peak season. Outside those dates you can visit without booking.

Tastings and experiences

• The Estate Experience — a guided 90-minute visit with a tasting of the estate’s wines and curated small bites. $80 per person, groups of up to six, 19+.
• The Private Chagall Room Experience — a guided welcome and tour followed by a four-course dinner in the private Chagall Room, with wines from the Legacy and Icon collections. $500 per person, designed for six to eight guests.
• The Terrace Restaurant — a five-course tasting menu built around the estate’s wines, $195 per person. Travel + Leisure named the Terrace one of the five best winery restaurants in the world in 2008.
• Wine flights — three wines from either the Terroir or Legacy collection, with charcuterie to add on. Walk-in seating, no reservation, subject to space.

Prices and availability change through the season, and the Terrace occasionally closes at short notice when wildfire smoke affects air quality. Check missionhillwinery.com before you set out.
